LiveSquare Security Team Advisories Return to the listing of advisories LSST [2008.40.274.0446] Online news content is being heavily targeted The Live Square Security Team has found a few more news systems that have been infected with malware. These news sites were infected by either SQL Injection or via malware feeds (third party content). Attackers are always seeking better locations to distribute malware and infect new systems. Online news systems and blogs are an excellent target, especially in high intensity news intervals. The rush to get out first, or to keep up with ongoing events lowers the awareness of the content generators. At the same time, attackers use peak news cycles to infect larger groups of victims based on sheer scale. Even detected and corrected infections have a staggering impact on unsuspecting users during the gap between infection and correction. Most malware in media content is focused on "drive by" infections. Media companies need to take measures to improve their ability to detect attacks, audit their third party content, and have regular content audits to combat this rising tide of attacks. |
